Purposes of the Conference: The 13th Annual New England Conference on Multicultural Education is designed to provide PK-12 and higher education teachers, administrators, school board members, parents, students, and community activists with the opportunity to:
Suggested Topic Areas Best Teaching Practices in PK-12 Classroom Teaching, in Teacher Preparation, and in Higher Education - Classroom and course instructors who have developed and successfully used engaging, thoughtful equity curricula and programs should share their practices and what they have learned with colleagues.
Cultural Competence is no longer an option for educators, but an absolutely necessary set of professional and personal skills. Culturally competent educators are comfortable discussing racial and ethnic issues with parents, students, and staff, evaluating equity in educational materials, and resolving cultural conflicts.
English Language Learners are enrolled in nearly every school, yet many educators have not had the opportunity to engage with the cultural, linguistic, diagnostic, or pedagogical strategies necessary to successfully teach them.
Increasing Student Achievement. How to support teachers in developing high expectations for all students to reach their full potential from Early Childhood to High School Completion.
Leadership in Promoting Equity speaks to the importance of developing school administrators at all levels who can lead multicultural school communities. Knowing how to recruit and retain diverse staff, promote positive inter-cultural relations.
School Climate is comprised of numerous factors, including bullying/harassment, discipline, and workplace morale. Equity in school climate is critical to improving academic achievement for all students.
Teaching Students with
Disabilities
requires an understanding not only of classroom strategies but of the
political and social context that still makes any form of disability a
badge of inferiority. The disproportionate representation of
students of color in special education is just one component of this
process. Title IX and Gender Equity require that schools develop appropriate policies, procedures, curricular and extracurricular approaches to ensure that both girls and boys enjoy equitable opportunities for academic success in an environment free of all forms of sex discrimination.
Schedule - There will be 14 concurrent sessions. Session A is from 10:30 am to noon, Session B: 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm and Session C: 3:15 pm to 4:45 pm. Each session will last 90 minutes and involve approximately 50 participants. Your audience will include experienced multicultural educators, educators new to multicultural education, parents, administrators, school board members, students, and community activists.
